1st tournament without gloves and all that cold weather gear and it was the last get5 tournament for the winter series. We were not in it for points standings, but wanted a good showing and I needed to fish so I could make the year end classic. It is at Bull Shoals and I have a Central Pro-Am toury there the next weekend. We had a limit early and played the culling game the rest of the day. Thats cool to do that early in the day then you can breath easy the rest of the day. We picked up the ole Underbite Custom Tackle Chicken (AKA the Alabama Rig) and also used A Macs Custom Painted Wiggle Wart. Had a decent day, but we were still a little off. We placed 6th and broke even. That dang Eli Powers and Trey Anderson did it again. They won, but this time they went over 20lbs WOWZERS!!!! I was happy to see the boys going good and we go to Bull in a about a month.
The weather is changing and somtimes Bass fishing can be GREAT or tough this time of year. We have all had those days when we are fishin and just catching them like crazy. Then we go back the next day or two and can't even buy a bite. Where did they go is what we always ask? But more important we should ask what should I do different?? Those fish didn't leave the lake and go hide. They are still in the general area. Maybe the wind has shifted or the lake has come up or even went down. There are a hundred things that could have changed. We as anglers need to not abandon the whole area. Fish live by instinct and we try to "reason" were they are or what they are doing. We over anaylze the situation daily Think back to all those times when you had good limits, were you doing something "miraclous" or hard, doubtful. You had a bait similar to what they were eating and was in the right area at the right time. A famous fishermen once told me its all timing and left it at that. It has taken me almost 10 yrs to understand that. Dont let it take you that long!! Don't reason yourself away from were the fish are.
This weekend was the third even for the Get 5 Series. Me and my partner made a showing with a limit, but now we need to get into the checkline!! This year is acting a little weird I can't buy a A-rig bite when needed. The Ole Macs Custom Crankbaits was the ticket. I had 2 get off at the boat in the 3lb class that would have helped, but thats why it's Fishin and not Catching!! I would like to give a Shout out two "good ole boys" Eli Powers and Trey Anderson who won. I work with them on various projects through the year and they are diehard, way to go boys!!
Plan to go deep is the usual go to this time of the year. Even if you toss a top water usually you are over deep water in our highland lakes. With the higher than normal water some fish have been caught in the bushes. I will be the first to try that over the deep stuff, but with all the hot Temps the bushes have not been paying off. So deep we went yesterday with a spoon and a Horsey swimmer.
Had a good afternoon of fishing a new bait from Underbite Custom Tackle yesterday the Horsey head with a Jennybugs Lil swimmer for the bait also found some fish on a spoon also. I'm usually the first to go shallow if possible, but with all the hot & muggy days lately I believe it is deep time.
